Budget is not the only factor in selecting which projects to do. The planner must also know whether there will be enough people to do the work. The Resource Planning page displays all resource demand for projects in a portfolio and enables the planner to create multiple what-if scenarios, analyze allocation, and, ultimately, approve a resource plan to staff the projects.
1. Resource allocation.
Let's take a closer look. Resource allocation can be planned for the current or next planning period. Create multiple scenarios to view impact on resource availability. For example, adjust resource allocation dates on lower priority projects to free up availability for high-priority projects.
2. View all projects with the resources requested.
View all projects in the portfolio, along with the resources requested. The time scale displays the demand and allocation for each resource. Display units by total hours or the full-time equivalent. Use the Highlight Deficits option to quickly show resource shortages.
In this example, there are not enough resources to fill the project manager role for the week of September 3 and two weeks in October. Use the charts below to view other projects requiring that resource for the same time period. Charts can be configured to show just the resources you want to focus on or all resources requested in the portfolio.
3. Adjust resource allocation.
Adjust resource allocation for each time period as needed. Adjust the allocations start date so the resource is available for the project at a different time, or exclude a project from being staffed. After you approve the resource plan, allocation values are committed for the projects. And the project manager is notified.
