1. Activity Types

Primavera Cloud supports five activity types. Activity dependent, resource dependent, level of effort, start milestone, and finish milestone. Two in particular, activity dependent and resource dependent, affect the start and finish dates of the activity after you schedule.

2. Activity Dependent activity
First, let's review the two activity types. Activity Dependent is used when work needs to be completed in a given time frame, regardless of the assigned resources' availability. Resources are scheduled to work according to the activity calendar. Duration is determined by the activity calendar.

3. Resource Dependent activity
Resource Dependent is typically used when multiple resources assigned to the same activity can work independently. Resources are scheduled according to the individuals resource calendar.

4. How Activity Type affects dates
Let's examine how activity type affects dates in your schedule. We will use the example of an activity that has a duration of two days. The activity is scheduled to start on Monday. It requires three resources, each working two days to complete the task.
The resources are laborer, engineer, and a truck-mounted crane. Each of the resources has a resource calendar with work days and off days indicated below. How many days will the activity be scheduled based on activity type? If the activity is activity dependent, the activity will start on Monday and finish on Tuesday because activity dependent ignores the resource calendars and instead uses the calendar assigned to the activity, which is a five-day work week.
If the activity is Resource-Dependent, the activity will start on Monday and finish on Thursday because resource-Dependent uses the Resource calendars to schedule. In this example, the crane is available only Tuesday and Thursday, and the engineer works only Wednesday and Thursday.
