A3.KCI-4. Determine and maintain the configuration

  1. Configuration management is the bridge between design and the rest of the world [5]. It ensures that the documentation we are going to deliver is in line with what is actually delivered. By using configuration management, you ensure that everyone works with the same version of the products and that the “value” of the products remains at the required level. Furthermore, it is clear where each product is at any given time, and who is working on it or is responsible for it.

  2. In the framework of configuration management, the responsibilities are as follows:

    • The project manager is ultimately responsible, and he draws up the configuration management plan.

    • The configuration manager prevents working on the wrong versions, checks the correctness of the versions (administrative check) and verifies that everyone is keeping to the rules.

    • All deliveries are to the configuration manager (with appropriate signatures). Configuration management is an integral part of the project approach.

Application

You can convert the above into actions on the project/programme/portfolio for which you are currently responsible, by carrying out the following steps:

  • Identify configuration items.

  • Manage the scope configuration.

  • Record roles and responsibilities.

  • Relate the configuration to the project approach.
